A PAIR OF VICTORIAN SILVER FIGURE SALTS George Fox for C.T. & G. Fox, London, 1873 Cast and chased, each figure standing on a circular plinth with 'Chinese' openwork base, the baskets with gilt interiors The unknown designer of these figures and his pattern modeller clearly took their inspiration from various eighteenth century prototypes, including porcelain figures and engravings. Of the latter may be cited the series of drawings of Parisian street merchants known as the Cris de Paris by the sculptor Edmé Bouchardon (1698-1762) that were distributed as engravings.
